the story

Jazz, hip-hop, and
all-around dope shit.

Not a background musician. Not a jazz purist. Harvey Cummings II is a saxophonist, pianist, producer, composer, educator and cultural curator whose work lives where music, storytelling, culture and unforgettable live experiences meet.

  1. 01

    Roots

Charlotte born, North Carolina Central raised. His debut Chicken Day EP takes its name from the weekly cafeteria ritual that turned an HBCU campus into a congregation — a record about where he's from and who raised him.

  2. 02

    Range

Keys and saxophone alongside 9th Wonder for Cartoon Network's The Boondocks. Stages shared with Anthony Hamilton, Angie Stone, Giveon, TLC and Fantasia. A performance for President Barack Obama. Programming for the Carolina Panthers and Super Bowl weekend.

  3. 03

    Language

Gospel discipline, bebop grit, hip-hop energy — tradition spoken with a modern accent. Music that moves from a hymn to a street anthem without dropping a beat, built to bring a younger and wider audience into the room.

Jazz is Black American music gone worldwide.
Jazz is the granddaddy.

The Only Child

Named for exactly what it says. Joan and Harvey's only child — the prodigy, the odd ball, the kid who was spoiled and lonely in the same breath, alone in a room with enough space to build a whole world. That's the record: what an only child does with all that room. He fills it with sound.

Chicken Day

A tribute to HBCU culture, named for the weekly cafeteria event at North Carolina Central. Laid-back and stimulating in the same breath — break beats, atmosphere, and horn lines with something to say.

the legacy

The music only
survives if it is handed down.

Mentorship, masterclasses, school workshops and community partnerships sit at the centre of Harvey's practice — not beside it. Artists deserve compensation. Jazz should evolve. Culture should be lived, not preserved in amber. Black creativity deserves investment and respect.
