iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Duo: What's Actually New, and Which One to Buy
John Ternus's first move as Apple CEO was a folding phone. My take on the new lineup — and why I'm still not sold the Duo works under a tailored suit.

I'll say the quiet part first: John Ternus's opening move as Apple CEO wasn't a mission statement, it was a folding phone — the thing Apple swore for a decade it wasn't building. That's the actual story here, more than anything on the spec sheet.
The lineup is three phones. iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, Pro Max at $1,299, both landing September 18 in four finishes — Deep Black, Silver, a genuinely good Burgundy, and a pale glacier blue I didn't expect Apple to greenlight. The camera's the real upgrade: a 48MP main sensor with variable aperture, real optical control over depth of field instead of software doing all the work. I'm interested.

The new lineup
| Model | Starts at | Ships |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 · 256GB | September 18 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,299 · 256GB | September 18 |
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 · 256GB | October 23 |
Then there's the Duo — Apple's first foldable, $1,999, out October 23. Titanium hinge, a 7.6-inch inner display, Apple Pencil on both screens, Touch ID moved to the side button since Face ID doesn't fit the fold. It's Apple's most expensive iPhone ever, by a wide margin.

Here's my actual hesitation, and it's not the price. I wear tailored suits. The Pro Max has always been the compromise — heavier, a rectangle my trouser pocket has to negotiate with all day. The Duo, folded, is worse: two panels stacked is real thickness, and a closed Duo in a trouser pocket doesn't sit like a phone, it sits like a growth, a hard square edge exactly where the leg is supposed to break clean. I want the Duo. I'm not sure I want what it does to the line.
My take: get the 18 Pro if you want the best of this generation without thinking twice. Get the Pro Max if screen and battery are the whole ask. The Duo's only worth it if you're actually going to use the fold every week — not just the first one, while you're showing it off at dinner.
